Thinking About Becoming a Spray Tan Technician? Choose Your Training Carefully

Spray tanning may be one of the most accessible beauty treatments to learn, but delivering consistently flawless results on paying clients is a professional skill.

A spray tan technician must understand far more than how to switch on a machine and spray solution onto a body. You are working with different skin types, undertones, body shapes, sensitivities and client expectations. You need the knowledge and practical ability to adapt your technique to the person standing in front of you.

If you want to build a respected, profitable business, your training matters.

Do You Need a Spray Tan Qualification?

The legal requirements for offering spray tan treatments vary around the world. In the UK and in many other countries, spray tanning is not currently a legally regulated treatment—although we firmly believe professional standards should be much stronger.

In some locations, this means a person may technically be able to offer spray tans without holding a recognised qualification. However, being legally permitted to perform a treatment does not mean you are properly trained, professionally insured or protected if something goes wrong.

A professionally trained technician should understand and follow the correct protocols, including client consultation, contraindications, patch testing where required, accurate record-keeping, hygiene, safe product use and appropriate aftercare.

Following these procedures significantly reduces the likelihood of an adverse reaction or complaint. It also demonstrates that you took reasonable professional care.

No qualification or protocol can guarantee that a client will never complain or make a claim. However, if you have followed your training, completed the necessary checks, maintained proper client records and hold appropriate insurance, you are in a far stronger position to protect yourself and your business.

If you are untrained, uninsured or unable to demonstrate that you followed the correct procedures, you could be left personally responsible for legal costs and compensation.

Professional education, documented protocols and appropriate insurance are not meaningless pieces of paper. They are fundamental protections for you, your clients and the business you are working to build.

Technicians should always check the specific training, licensing, insurance and patch-testing requirements that apply within their own country or region.

A Certificate Does Not Always Mean Competence

The standard of spray tan training available varies enormously.

It is now possible to purchase an online spray tan course for as little as £25, work through a few pages of theory and download a certificate without ever spraying a real person under professional supervision.

A certificate of completion is not necessarily proof of practical competence.

Online learning can be extremely valuable for theory, preparation and continued professional development. However, watching a video is not the same as being observed, corrected and guided while working on real bodies.

Before enrolling, look beyond the words “accredited” and “certified.” Ask what the course actually includes, how your practical ability will be assessed and whether the training will genuinely prepare you to work on paying clients.

Is a Half-Day Spray Tan Course Enough?

For a complete beginner, we do not believe that a rushed half-day course provides enough time to develop professional competence.

During proper foundation training, you need time to understand:

  • Skin types, tones and undertones
  • DHA percentages and solution selection
  • Client consultation and expectation management
  • Contraindications, patch testing and health and safety
  • Preparation and aftercare
  • Equipment setup, spray patterns and gun control
  • Correct distance, speed and product application
  • Body positioning and professional client care
  • Common tanning problems and how to prevent them
  • Cleaning, maintenance and hygienic working practices
  • How to assess your finished result
  • The fundamentals of setting up and protecting your business

Trying to cover all of this properly, teach practical application and assess a complete beginner in only a few hours inevitably means something will be rushed.

A half-day session can be useful as a refresher or focused masterclass for an already-qualified and experienced technician. It should not be treated as a substitute for comprehensive foundation training.

Why Spraying One Model Is Not Enough

No two clients are identical.

One model cannot teach you how to adapt your technique for different:

  • Heights and body shapes
  • Skin tones and undertones
  • Dry, mature or sensitive skin
  • Hands, feet, elbows and knees
  • Posture and mobility requirements
  • Modesty needs and confidence levels
  • Desired depths and finished results

Your first model may be straightforward. Your first paying client may not be.

Working on multiple models allows you to repeat the process, improve your gun control and receive feedback while the educator is still there to correct you.

It also helps reveal whether you have genuinely understood the technique or simply managed to complete it once.

Professional training should build real competence—not simply provide the quickest possible route to a certificate.

Spray Tanning Is a Profession, Not a Hobby

There is nothing wrong with beginning part-time or offering spray tanning alongside another job. Many successful beauty businesses start that way.

However, whether you treat one client a week or twenty clients a day, the standard expected from you should still be professional.

Clients are paying for your expertise, not just the solution you apply. They expect an even result, appropriate colour selection, safe working practices, knowledgeable advice and the confidence that you can manage their individual needs.

Cheap, inadequate training rarely saves money in the long term. It can leave new technicians lacking confidence, wasting solution, producing inconsistent results and eventually paying for further education to correct what they were never properly taught.

Investing in high-quality education from the beginning gives you stronger foundations, better results and a business you can confidently grow.

What Should Professional Spray Tan Training Include?

A quality beginner programme should combine comprehensive theory with supervised practical education.

Before booking, ask the training provider:

  • Is the course accredited and accepted by appropriate insurance providers?
  • Does it include supervised practical training?
  • How many models will I work on?
  • Will my practical technique be individually assessed?
  • How experienced is the educator?
  • Will I learn how to select solutions rather than follow one standard formula?
  • Will I be taught how to adapt my technique to different clients?
  • Is support available after the course?
  • Will I leave genuinely ready to treat paying clients?

A low price, short course time or instant certificate may appear attractive. The better question is whether the course will make you a knowledgeable, capable and insurable professional.

The SkinSmart Approach

SkinSmart education is built around professional standards, strong technical knowledge and confident practical application.

We do not believe in rushing beginners through a few hours of training, asking them to spray one convenient model and sending them away with a certificate.

Our aim is to develop technicians who understand what they are doing, why they are doing it and how to adapt when a client does not fit a standard example.

Our education is brand-neutral, allowing technicians to understand skin, colour, formulation and application rather than simply being taught to follow one product brand’s instructions.

Spray tanning deserves to be recognised as a skilled professional treatment—and those entering the industry deserve training that genuinely prepares them for it.
